Sweet Chestnut log specification

Species -
Sweet Chestnut either coppice-grown or maidens

Selection –
no bends in excess of 50mm in length allowed

Length -
2m & 3m logs straight cross cut

Top Diameter –
175mm diameter under-bark – max generally 300mm

Colour –
to be good even colour no staining or brown heart. 

Knots –
large knotty timber with knots over 50mm need to be trimmed out.

Defects to be excluded –

  • Ring Shake - No ring shake will be allowed in any way – logs will be rejected where this is present and any material must be cut back until timber is sound.
  • Splits – badly split and damaged timber to be excluded.
  • Brown heart – decayed brown heart will be rejected.
  • Wood Boring Beetle – all infested timber must be excluded.
  • Rot – any unsound and decayed timber to be rejected.
  • Metal or metallic staining – no logs with any embedded metal or stained by metal will be allowed. Hedgerow timber will generally not be acceptable .
